Munich Airport’s New Satellite Terminal
A new satellite passenger terminal is scheduled to open this spring, increasing annual capacity by 11 million passengers and more than doubling the number of Terminal 2 pierside aircraft positions from 24 to 51. Since the satellite will not have public access, check-in, passport control and security screening will take place in Terminal 2, and passengers will then transfer via an underground transport system to the satellite terminal in less than one minute.
Once passengers arrive in the new terminal, a wide array of new attractive services and amenities tailored to individual needs will await passengers. Quiet zones feature comfortable reclining seating for those passengers who want to relax and unwind. Free WLAN access as well as plentiful electric outlets and USB connections are available for those who prefer to use waiting time productively. Four showers in the gate area are accessible to all passengers who wish to freshen up before departing on long-haul flights. For families with children, there are well-marked play areas for little ones to expend their energy before boarding, and there are baby changing tables in the men’s and women’s restrooms.
The new terminal will house five new Lufthansa lounges. A special feature of the Senator and Business lounges on the Non-Schengen Level: A bar serving cold and hot beverages, specialty coffees and cocktails extends along the panoramic windows connecting the two lounges, which also offer buffets, separate working areas, a TV zone and comfortable showers. Unaccompanied minors will find a lounge dedicated to their needs with all the comforts of home — foosball table, big cushions for stretching out, two networked PCs and a play corner. Passengers with mobility restrictions can relax in their own lounge in the satellite terminal which offers four special lounge chairs, fully accessible toilets and a shower, and a selection of newspapers and magazines as well as television.
The facility will also offer a central marketplace, an open space flooded with natural light around the apron tower offering passengers an entirely new shopping and dining experience, incorporating Bavarian hospitality and traditions blended with Munich’s unique lifestyle and state-of-the-art technology. The architecture and decor of the “Lenbachs” tower bar, the focal point of the marketplace, were inspired by the Bavarian painter Franz von Lenbach. At the stands in Schubeck’s “Viktualienmarkt,” named for the renowned outdoor marketplace in the Munich city center, high-quality snacks will be available to enjoy immediately or packaged for take-out. “Sissi & Franz” is an edgy reimagining of Vienna coffee house culture and courtly traditions bridging the culinary gap between Bavaria and Austria. There will be a total of 16 retail stores, three Duty Free shops and seven dining options encompassing Munich Airport’s innovative hospitality and retail concept in the new satellite terminal.
